GENERAL SURGERY

DEPARTMENT OF GENERAL SURGERY

Established in 2021, in affiliation with the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. University – The Department of General Surgery, under Prof. Dr. R. Murugesan, our Dean, is currently headed by Associate Prof. Dr. V. Uma Maheswari. The Department offers surgical care to approximately 10 or so Taluks in and around the Tiruppur District, boasts of a mixed population of about 24,79,502 people from all over India.

On an average, about 280-300 outpatients, around 70-90 emergency cases which include RTAs, Assaults, Acute Abdomen, etc. and  about 210 inpatients are handled per day. Other than surgical services and care, the Department of General Surgery also boasts of a robust academic reach and coverage. It imparts education to IMG Students, FMG CRMIs, and PG trainees.

      Currently, the department is on a constant uphill in popularity and progress, with a lot of ongoing researches and developments. The research programs are also well progressing with many researches underway, and most already published in national journals.

DEPARTMENTAL ADMINISTRATION

The Head of the Department oversees and monitors the functioning of the entire department, ensuring seamless coordination and cooperation among the various units and individuals, while also presiding over all the important activities and events held.

        There are three units in the department, which are each headed by a Chief. The chief acts as a supervisor, and handles the big and small intricacies of each unit, making sure the routines and activities run smoothly on a daily basis. The Chiefs and the Head of the Department act as the presiding committee over the whole department, ensuring smooth functioning, equivalent opportunities, and good quality of care.

DEPARTMENT INFRASTRUCTURE

The surgery and allied departments stands tall in four floors in the new building. The Surgery department itself is contained in one floor, which includes 3 male and 2 female wards with 30 beds in each ward, and there are separate male and female Post-Operative Wards. An exclusive state of Art SICU is present with 17 beds with separate Male & Female Burns ICU.

Department also consists of a Daycare OT with three tables, a dedicated Endoscopic OT, TAEIOT & Main OT complex with 5 OTs for general surgery. TAEI OT   with three tables for the Emergency Cases, runs round the clock, 24 hours and all days of the week. For outpatient dressing, there are two dressing rooms, one for males and the other for females, and a Wound Dressing room accompanies each ward.

  There is an ever-available Duty Anesthetist to provide immediate surgical care for surgical emergencies. The state of art Surgical Intensive Care Unit, with a round-the-clock Assistant Professor, accompanied by Senior and Junior residents, and well-trained and informed staff nurses takes care of high risk Pre operative &post-operative cases and the Critically Ill patients.

The efficient emergency ward has a responsive Triage System, followed by prompt admission, immediate resuscitation when required, and preliminary care according to the severity of the cases, once stabilization follows – the patients are immediately shifted to their respective departments.

In accordance with the Chief Minister Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS), Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), Innuyir Kaakum Thittam (IKT), and the Pradhan Mantra Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY); have proved beneficial for the residents in and around the area.

 Our doctors excel not only in all general surgical procedures, but also in oncological, gastro intestinal and vascular surgeries as well. Here are few notable and remarkable operative pictures.

Department timings:

The schedule of the department is very rigorous with an OPD that takes place every day from 7.30 AM to 12 noon, and an Emergency OPS that functions at the TAEI ward with its adjoining TAEI OT that is open 24/7 for the emergency surgical cases.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT:

UG TRAINING PROGRAMME:

Regular lecture sessions, are taken by the faculty of the departments on a plethora of topics, based on the CBME curriculum. Students enter the wards from First Year itself for their ECE.  Subsequently, the MBBS students are posted in the surgery wards, OPDs and OTs from their second year.Routine daily Bedside classes are taken for the IMG students in thorough, meticulous detail by the Assistant Professors. And the IMG students are also graded on the basis of Periodic Internal Assessments, both Theory and Practical. Weekly lectures,Self-directedLearning,  Small group teachings,  monthly symposiums, and Operative Surgery demonstrations are regularly planned and executed as well.

Post-MBBS, interns are posted in the three units for the durations of one-and-a-half-month total, and the posting involves training via the day-to-day activities of the unit, along with exposure to Major and Minor Surgical Procedures.

The total number of academic students involve 100 IMGs per Year, 108 FMG CRMIs, 15 PGs involved with the district residential program, and along with that are also included – the nursing, allied health professionals and OT Technicians.Two weekly academic meetings are held, along with a monthly schedule of one Journal Club, three symposiums, and two seminars – all of which are very contributory to the development and progress of the department and all its students.

Academic explorations:

During the last Academic year, the first CME of Tiruppur medical college was conducted regarding Diabetic Foot Syndrome was held on 11.11.2022 which had an attendance of 300 participants with faculties from renowned Institutes as Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore, Karur medical college, Esi medical college, including practicing physicians of the Tiruppur District.it was a mega event with a university credit points of 10 & medical council credit hours of 2.

In accordance with Breast cancer Awareness month of October, we had celebrated the occasion with a excellent camp screening all the hospital women personnel above 40 years by triple assessment. We also had an informal meeting with all the breast cancer survivors who were treated by us for the past 3 years.66 participants were screened & 3 suspicious lesions were identified.

Excellent Hands-on workshop was conducted with active participation, and good reviews for GI Stapling. An exclusive skills lab training was conducted for IV access and another one for suturing for CRMIs, where the attendees were given a fresh perspective and a review on these procedures along with evaluation and practice to further hone their skills. Other than these, there are constant theory classes and lectures conducted to reinstate old concepts while also introducing new concepts in the ever-evolving fields of medicine and surgery.

This Year, we conducted the II CME BREAST CANCER- A REVISIT TO PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE on 7.10 2023 to earmark the beginning of PINK OCTOBER – BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH. The program was pure offline cme with298 participants.

The research prospect of the department is very thriving and active with aboutcurrently 7 to 8 active projects underway, fully funded and controlled by the department.
