Infection control         Research Activity

  • Clinical Microbiology
  • Microbiology is a branch of medical science concerned with diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infectious diseases. In addition, this field of science studies various clinical applications of microbes for the improvement of health. Rapid diagnosis of pathogens is important for initiating effective and early treatment of patients  and for improving the outcomes of treatment.
  • Our Clinical microbiology laboratory is indented in patient care by providing various proper microbiological diagnostic facilities  regarding infectious disease.
  • We have various branches like Bacteriology, Virology (Molecular Biology), Serology, Mycology, Parasitology and Immunology.
  • We are participating in National Prevention Programmes like National AIDS Control Program (NACO), National Viral Hepatitis Control Programme (NVHCP), Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), National Tuberculosis Eradication Programme (NTEP) and Malarial Eradication Programme.
  • Faculty

  • ACADEMIC ACTIVITY:

Our academic activities involve training & teaching Indian Medical Graduates, CRMI, District Residential Programme Post graduates and Diploma in Medical laboratory students.

Our undergraduate Medical students are encouraged to involve in ICMR research projects.

We strictly adhere to the National Medical Council (NMC) curriculum and teaching learning methods.

Students Practical Laboratory :

Museum:

Our Museum has charts, models and mounted specimens.

  • FACILITIES:

Our Department have adequate infrastructure, equipments, consumables and well furnished as per NMC norms.

BACTERIOLOGY :

Microscopy: Gram’s Stain, Ziehl-Neelson Stain, Slit Skin Smear, Albert’S Stain, Hanging drop, Urethral Smear, Modified ZN.

Aerobic Bacterial Culture & Sensitivity: Blood, Urine, Pus, Sputum, Throat swab, ET Tube, Body Fluids, Tissue Sample, Vaginal Swab, IV catheter.

Sterility Testing : Water analysis, Theatre Sterility, Blood Bag, Biological indicator culture for sterility

We process everyday around 50 samples for microscopic and culture sensitivity testing. The antibiotic sensitivity testing and interpretations are done according to CLSI guidelines. We give our major input for hospital IPC and antibiotic policy manual.

Media Preparation:

Various solid, semisolid, liquid media and stains are  prepared with sterility and quality control checking for bacteriology purpose.

SEROLOGY:

The following serological testing are done in our laboratory

Around 80 to 100 samples are processed everyday

ELISA : Dengue IgM ELISA, Dengue NS1 ELISA, HBsAg ELISA, Anti HCV ELISA, Anti HAV IgM ELISA, Anti HEV IgM ELISA, Scrub typhus IgM ELISA, Anti HCV Rapid Card, Lepto IgM ELISA, Chikungunya IgM ELISA

Rapid Serological test: Malarial Antigen card test, Rapid Plasma Reagin test, C-reactive protein, Anti Streptolysin O test, Widal test, Rheumatoid factor, Syphilis rapid card test, HBsAg Rapid Card.

PARASITOLOGY:

Thick and thin peripheral blood for Malarial & Filarial diagnosis, stool for ova cyst are done for around 10 samples.

Microscopy: Thick & Thin Blood smear for Malarial & Filarial Parasite, Stool for Ova & Cyst, Modified ZN for Cryptosporidium, Liver Abscess (immediate sample) for E.histolytica Trophozoite.

MYCOLOGY:

Fungal culture and microscopic examinations are done for various clinical samples including fungal keratitis and dermatophytic infections.

Microscopy: KOH & LPCB wet mount for fungal filaments, INDIA INK – Cryptococcus sp.

VIROLOGY (MOLECULAR BIOLOGY):

RTPCR tests were started in our Institution at May 2020 for the COVID pandemic diagnosis. We served people in and around Tiruppur district for COVID diagnosis and have run around 16 lakhs COVID samples in our laboratory.

We also do quantification molecular tests for Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C viral infections for starting treatment.

EXTERNAL QUALITY ASSESSMENT:

To improve our laboratory work quality we are involved in processing EQAS sample for Bacteriology, Serology and Parasitology from CMC, Vellore and JIPMER, Puduchery every quarterly.

INTEGRATED  COUNSELLING TESTING CENTER :

HIV screening and counselling is performed for the patients around 50/day. EQAS is done once in three months. RCRT is also done once in a month.

NATIONAL TUBERCULOSIS ERADICATION PROGRAMME

Molecular testing (CBNAAT) for diagnosis of pulmonary & extra pulmonary tuberculosis along with MDR TB is done for infected patients from our hospital and also from public.

  • INFECTION CONTROL

We also play a major role in our hospital Infection control activities,     Bio Medical Waste Management, Control & Management of any upcoming epidemics. Regular monthly meetings are conducted.

RESEARCH ACTIVITY:

Ongoing projects:

1. Assessing the Invitro activity of Ceftazidime –avibactum and Aztreonam among Carbapenemase producing Enterobacterales: Defining the zone of hope by Disc diffusion method.
